What is Contingent Compensation?

A fixed upfront fee only

Net profits, modified adjusted gross, or adjusted gross

Contingent compensation is pay that isn’t guaranteed upfront and depends on how well the project performs financially. In entertainment contracts, those payments are typically described as a share of profits or a share of defined gross revenue, with the contract spelling out the exact base. The most common forms used for this purpose are net profits, modified adjusted gross, or adjusted gross. These terms set the basis from which a participant earns their portion after applying the contract’s deductions and definitions.

Fixed upfront fees or upfront travel stipends are guaranteed money and therefore are not contingent. Residuals are indeed contingent and paid when a project is reused, but the standard description of contingent compensation centers on these profit- or defined-gross-based bases like net profits, MAG, or AG.
